Step 1:  
Description:

La Selva weather data started to be collected in 1957 in a weather station near Casa Rafael. In this site precipitation data was collected manually over a 34-year period. As station operations shifted to the East Bank of the Puerto Viejo River, the meteorological station was moved to the East Bank (the 'Puente' station). Between 1982-1992, both stations were in operation, in 1992 an automatic weather station was installed in Puente site and data collection in Rafael's point ceased. In 1999 long term records were created to join this three data sources: Rafael, manual Puente and automatic Puente. This database is compounded of 5 diferents datasets: precipitation, temperature, relative humidity, light and wind.

Sampling Description:
Both manual and automatic daily rain summaries are calculated for 24-hour periods that begin and end at 0700 each day. Thus the amount of rain reported for 24 March 1994 represents the amount that fell during the 24 hours preceding 0700 on 24 March 1994. A Qualimetrics model 6011-B tipping bucket system gathers the automatic precipitation data. The dataloger produces hourly and daily totals. In general, the tipping bucket tends to measure traces of rain that the manual rain gauge does not. Also, during heavy rain, the tipping bucket tends to measure a little higher than the manual rain gauge. The tipping bucket sensitivity is given by the mercury switch closure speed (0.1s), at lower rain fall rates (<12mm/h) the accuracy is 0.5 percent. With heavy rain this accuracy is less.
