Abstract:
Dataset consists of two components, stored as separate ESRI-standard Shape Files: 1) Polygon Shape file containing 2103 watershed regions for the continental United States, categorized by USGS Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC-8). 2) Point Shape file containing the location coordinates and eighteen descriptive attributes for 75,100 dams within the continental United States. One of the attributes is the HUC-8 code corresponding to the watershed that bounds the dam location. Source for dam locations: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 1996. National Inventory of Dams, National Water Control Infrastructure, CD-ROM (Washington, D.C.: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Federal Emergency Management Agency). The dam locations are derived from the National Inventory of Dams data set generated and maintained by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Description:

Acquiring the dataset

I obtained the United States dam locations from the USGS data distribution web site. I obtained the HUC polygons from the National Hydrological Dataset (enhanced edition) produced for the US EPA by private contractor Horizons Systems, Inc and available to the scientific community. I assigned polygon attributes to each dam location point using an R script described below.

Sampling Description:
We used an R script that implemented a Point-In-Polygon algorithm to assign the surrounding HUC-8 watershed polygon to each dam point location. The script is packaged with the component datasets in a compressed (zip) archive file available from the NCEAS Data Repository.
