| Morpho: Data Management for Ecologists |
|
Download Morpho
Morpho is a data management application targeted at
ecologists. It is tightly integrated with the Knowledge Network for
Biocomplexity, making it easy for ecologists to manage their own
data and collaborate with other researchers through the KNB. It
includes an advanced data query tool, metadata creation tool, and
data management facilities, and, because it is based on Java, works
equally well on Windows, Macintosh, and UNIX operating systems.

| Metacat: the flexible XML Database |
|
Download Metacat
Metacat is a flexible metadata database. It utilizes XML as a
common syntax for representing the large number of metadata content
standards that are relevant to ecology. Thus, Metacat is a generic
XML database that allows storage, query, and retrieval of arbitrary
XML documents without prior knowledge of the XML schema.

| Ecological Metadata Language (EML) |
|
Download EML
Ecological Metadata Language (EML) is a metadata standard
developed by the ecology discipline and for the ecology discipline.
It is based on prior work done by the Ecological Society of America
and associated efforts. EML is implemented as a series of XML
document types that can by used in a modular and extensible manner
to document ecological data.

| Monarch |
|
Monarch is a flexible tool for exploratory analysis of data.
Its goal is to support analysis and synthesis of arbitrary data
files via structured semantic metadata. Monarch utilizes powerful
back-end analytical environments like SAS, R and MatLab to run
analysis pipelines on the data itself.

| Itislib |
|
Download Itislib
Itislib is a Java library designed to provide an Application
Programming Interface (API) to the ITIS*ca database of taxonomic
nomenclature. This interface includes the ability to search the ITIS*ca database for a string
match to a taxon name, which returns the ITIS Taxonomic Serial
Number (TSN) for that taxon. One can then use the TSN to query
ITIS*ca and find the scientific name, rank, author, synonym taxa,
parent taxa, and children taxa (e.g., species within a genus), among
other information. The "Itis" class is the main entry point for
programmers to utilize the interface. All communication with the
ITIS*ca database is accomplished using HTTP requests and XML
formatted responses. See ITIS*ca
for details on the ITIS database.

| Storage Resource Broker (SRB) |
|
The Storage Resource Broker (SRB) is a client-server
architecture developed at the San Diego Super Computer Center to
link a distributed network of heterogeneous storage resources. It
provides advanced services such as replication across a variety of
storage devices, including UNIX and NT filesystems, tape systems,
hierarchical storage systems, and relational databases. The KNB is
using the SRB through the Metacat server for management of large
data objects.
