SBCLTER: Transect Depths for Long Term Kelp Removal Experment
Short Name:
Transects: Benthic LTE KR sites
Identifier:
knb-lter-sbc.44
Abstract:
These data summarize depth information (mean, standard deviation and
coefficient of variation) for all of the transects surveyed as part of the SBC LTER Long
Term Kelp Removal Experiment. All data are expressed in meters, referenced to mean lower low
water (MLLW). Each value is the result of 160 observations, four at each meter (n=160). The
sampling locations in this dataset are 40 meter transects at four reef sites along the
mainland coast of the Santa Barbara Channel, California, USA. These data were recorded in
2010.
Arroyo Quemado Transect 4: a line starting at the lat-lon coordinates with a length of 40 (meter), and width of 2 (meter) along a heading of 90 (degree). Transect begins east of the river mouth. Bedrock with several large
boulder outcrops creating some significant relief (0-2.5 m) along transect. Some moderate
sized areas of sand (1-5 m). Depth is approximately 23 feet.

Description:
Depth Surveys
A diver reels out a 40 meter tape along the marked transect location. Using a dive
computer, the diver records depth readings at points 0.25 and 0.75 meters offshore and
0.25 and 0.75 meters inshore for every meter along the transect. There are a total of
160 measurements for each 40 meter transect.
