Abstract:

Data were extracted from a large collection of published and unpublished studies that examined the effects of transgenic Bt crops on nontarget invertebrate species. Nontarget species are species other than the pest targeted by the specific Bt crop variety. Database includes methodological details and results from each study, as well as a full literature citation and information about the authors of each paper. Individual studies frequently examined multiple species or reported multiple response variables. Each line of data represents a single comparison of an invertebrate organism in an 'exposed' versus a 'control' treatment. Control treatments are non-transgenic varieties of the same crop species, either with or without pesticide applications. Both field and lab studies are included. In some cases, data were obtained by scanning figures and measuring data values from the scanned images. We attempted to contact authors of papers to verify scanned data values and to fill in missing details about their studies. Whether the author replied is indicated in the database.

Description:
|
Criteria for inclusion in this database
1. Study compares a Bt crop and a non-Bt crop (either with or without pesticide application). 2. Study reports a response (e.g. survival, fecundity, abundance, presence) of at least one non-target invertebrate group. 3. Means and SDs reported for each treatment or available from the author.
